Blue Faces, Tall Trees, and a New Spotlight
by Lynn Daniels on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at 8:33 am
I tried to spend time with Mel last night. He was sporting long hair, a blue face, and a kilt. It was such a good look for him, how could I resist? Unfortunately, it’d been a really long day, and I was having trouble keeping my eyes open. I said goodnight to Mel earlier than expected and floated off to dreamland.
Yesterday, I predicted I’d finish that crit I owe. All I can say is I’m definitely not psychic. Not only did I not finish it, I didn’t even open it. Partly because of Mel (he can be very distracting!), partly because of my early bedtime, and partly because for the first time in months, I opened and read most of BMO. I had figured the last half of the book was in pretty rough shape and would probably be painful to read, but I was pleasantly surprised. It needs a lot of layering, but I think the foundation’s strong and the writing’s not half-bad. Always nice to be surprised that way!
3 Days Gone and I’m Still Baffled
by Lynn Daniels on Monday, February 27, 2006 at 7:15 am
This weekend wasn’t as productive for me as last weekend was, but I still got a lot done. Finished one website, started another. I also got some more work done on that crit, although it’s not finished yet. However, it’s close enough that I can comfortably predict I’ll have it finished today.
Friday was apparently my Ditz Day. I’m not normally a ditz, but Friday morning, I did something that made me question my own sanity. Not that it was a big deal, but it was one of those things that made me stand there and ask, “How the hell did that happen?”
Too Easy, Drill Sergeant!

Since Sunday is music day, I thought I’d start off by letting you know (just in case you’re interested) the CDs shuffling in my truck have changed. Which also means the music clips available in the far right sidebar have also changed. Give a listen if you get a chance!
Also music-related…I just read a piece on Melodicrock.com that’s got me excited. On Friday, MTM Music announced they’ve signed Mother’s Finest for their new live record; scheduled release date is April 2006. The MTM site I linked above has a full press release including track listing, if you’re interested.
If you’re a rocker like me, you ain’t seen nothin’ until you’ve seen Mother’s Finest live!

This week’s topic on one of the mailing lists I subsribe to is Conflict. Since I’ve never blogged about conflict before, I figured it was about darn time.
Plus, I needed a writing post for what’s supposed to be a writing-related blog.
Conflict is the thing that springs from our characters, and it’s what keeps our stories going. Sometimes the internal and external conflicts of my characters come to me in a flash. A bright light blinds me before conflict pulls a Houdini and is suddenly just there. Other times, finding my characters’ conflicts is about as easy as running a 10K marathon while wearing snow skis.
I Wanna Be Like Taylor

Didn’t get much of anything done on my own writing last night, but I did get some tweaks done to my friend’s website, and I got some good critting in. As far as the day went, I’m pleased.
I’m hoping to do some more critting today — maybe even finish. That’d be nice, because then I could go back on work exclusively on my own stuff for a while. Don’t get me wrong — I love critting. I love reading what my friends have written. But I enjoy working on my own stuff, too.
I have a summary to finish, an article to write (or rewrite, as it were), and a dreaded synopsis to work on. And I’d like to make significant progress on all three by the beginning of next week. So there you have it, my short-term plan.
The Bookbag, Drool, and High Hopes for the New Day
by Lynn Daniels on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at 7:47 am
Okay, so I thought yesterday would be my day to make rippin’ progress on my writing, since the kids were finally back in school and I could return to my nice little schedule. Well, my stress levels were way down, but no progress was made. What is it they say about the best laid plans?
SoundGuy wakes me up. I do my usual morning stumble and trudge, get dressed, and take the kids to school. I’m dropping them off, and LittleDude hops out of the truck empty-handed.
“Where’s your bookbag?” I ask.
“I dunno.”
We search the truck, no bookbag. Now, every morning, when I’m herding the kids out the door, I remind LittleDude to bring his bookbag. And every morning he picks it up, hoists it over his shoulders, and runs down the front steps. Yesterday was no exception. I knew he’d grabbed his bookbag, I remembered clearly holding my breath as he ran down those stairs, certain he was going to fall. Still, the proof was in the pudding. No bookbag in the truck. I tell him I’ll bring it up to the school later.
Out With the Bad…
by Lynn Daniels on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at 7:45 am
I’ve mentioned that we’re in the process of buying a house (closing in a little over a week ). After SoundGuy brought up packing last night (resulting in a conversation that had the word “you” coming out of his mouth more frequently than I liked), I started thinking more about the house, and the things I needed to do in preparation for the move, tentatively scheduled for mid-March.
Aside from the massive packing — which I’m dreading — we’ll be doing a lot to get the new house ready: cleaning, painting, SoundGuy wants to replace the floor in the formal living room… There’s so much to consider! So of course, I hopped out on to the internet for any help I could find. I know certain colors evoke certain emotions, there are things to do for good luck…I was going all out. During my initial internet bopping, I ran across a couple of Pagan cleansing rituals, which brought me to some New Age articles dealing with ridding the new home of negative energy.
Obviously, we’ll want to start our life in the new house on the best foot possible, so I did a little more research. Since we’ve been told the house was being sold because the owners were divorcing, banishing that negative energy probably wouldn’t be a bad idea. I found some great articles on “smudging,” which, in turn, led me to Feng Shui.
Weighing Sex Against Anger…
by Lynn Daniels on Monday, February 20, 2006 at 7:33 am
I actually had a productive weekend.
That sounded like I’m surprised, didn’t it? Well, I guess I am. I normally don’t do much writing-wise on the weekends — and since this was a 5-day weekend for the kids, I expected to accomplish exactly nil. Nada. The big goose egg. But it seems the creativity bug (ugly little sucker, but quite useful at times) snuck up and bit me on the butt. And along with the inescapable compulsion to write, it left a big ol’ red mark on my posterior. Made sitting down interesting.
Finished one crit, and made lots and lots of progress on the FDi30D SR summary. I spent time transcribing all those handwritten pages into the computer (I was actually able to read my own handwriting and decipher my notes!), and discovered what I’ve written so far equals 35 double-spaced pages. Makes for a pretty darned complete summary if I say so, myself — especially considering we’ve not even reached the halfway point in the story. At this rate, I’ll bust through the 100-page mark before it’s over.
Failure
by Lynn Daniels on Sunday, February 19, 2006 at 2:46 pm
There was a major drive failure at my webhost this morning.
If you’ve tried to reach the site today and got a 404 error. I apologize. Looks like it’s back up, though, although they did the restore as of Friday evening. I’ve reposted Saturday and Sunday’s posts — they appear beneath this one. However, I’ve just realized that comments made to Friday’s post were not restored. I think I still have most of them in my e-mail, so I’ll restore what I can manually.
Thanks for your patience!
(EDITED 19 FEB 06 03:24PM TO ADD: I think I’ve got everything restored now. Please let me know if I’ve missed anything.)
