Wednesday Workout #1 - Reeling it in
by Lynn Daniels on Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at 1:54 pm
It’s Wednesday, and as I promised, we’re going to try a new feature out. Depending on how y’all feel about it (we’ll give it a few weeks, of course), I’ll either keep it or dump it.
Anyway, it’s the Wednesday Workout. I’ve spent some time bopping around the ‘net and culling a number of writing exercises and prompts designed to get us thinking, get us writing, and hopefully, give us a little fun. I’ll post a new one every Wednesday, citing and linking the source. What you do beyond that is your choice.
Slowly I Turn…Step By Step…Inch By Inch…

It’s getting late, so I figured I’d better get my post in.
I’ve had a productive day. Although my index cards aren’t up on my wall yet, they’re all done and entered into SuperNotecard. My FDi30D scene capsule worksheet is finished, as well. Now it’s time to go through all the scenes, combine the capsules that contain the same scenes, and split the ones that are so obviously more than one scene.
Sweating and Summarizing

How was everybody’s Memorial Day (or if you’re not in the States, how was your Monday?)?
We had a nice family day. SoundGuy and I took the kids up to the mountains and did some hiking. We returned to one of our favorite trails, Dukes Creek Falls. The website lists it as a 1.9 mile hike, but the signs at the site say it’s 1.1 miles down to the falls, a 2.2-mile hike round trip. Once we got down to the falls, we spent a lot of time on the observation deck, enjoying the breeze and the spray from the water. MiniMe and I decided to take a shortcut back up the trail when SoundGuy and LittleDude weren’t looking, and that little shortcut kicked my butt. Luckily, we ended up so far ahead of the guys, I had the opportunity to plop down on my rear end and rest up.
Lost in Translation

I’ve been sitting here in the living room, laptop in my lap (because where else should it be?), working on crits and rockin’ out. And having to work seriously hard to avoid jumping from my seat and dancing like a maniac.
Why am I resisting, you ask? Who the hell knows? But I haven’t been totally resisting. A little headbanging, a lot of singing…
Damn. I need a beer.
I think I’ll go get one. But first, I leave you with this week’s Messed Up Tune.

I’ve just done a security update of WordPress. It looks okay to me, but if you run into any problems, please let me know.
The idea for today’s entry came to me after reading a post over at Romance Divas.
We all know cliches are cliches because they’re used so much. Even overused. And it’s because of that overuse we’re told that if we’re going to use cliches in our writing, it’s best to change them and make them our own.
In my case, I like to change those cliches so they relate directly to my customers’ personalities, jobs, or interests.
So lets play a game.
Let’s take the cliche It hit him/her like a ton of bricks and make it our own. Let’s fold, spindle, and mutilate it. Have fun with it.
Give me your change to the cliche, and who would be saying it. I’ll start.
It hit him like a bedpan to the side of the head.
— hospital worker
It hit her like hot coffee flung in her face.
— waitress
Your turn!
Thursday Potpourri Post

Just in for a quickie today (why does that always sound so dirty?)…
The last day of school is tomorrow, and LittleDude actually had to stay home sick today. I’m having to wear my Mommy Hat today and take care of him. Poor kid. He’s missing his end-of-the-year party.
Since LittleDude is home today, I had to reschedule my second round of gum flap surgery (it was supposed to happen today at noon). Now I’m going in next week, which puts my follow-up appointment right before we leave for this year’s Yellowstone vacation. Ain’t I the lucky girl?

Ack! I forgot to post yesterday!
Actually, since I haven’t gone to sleep yet, it’s still today as far as I’m concerned (did that make sense?). So for the purposes of this post (and to keep my brain from exploding), today means Tuesday, and yesterday is Monday.
Got it?

First thing’s first — Andrew’s little hints yesterday told me he knew exactly what the Messed Up Tune was. He mentioned Will to Power, who did the late 80’s song “Baby, I Love Your Way/Freebird” … the Messed Up Tune was, in fact, “Baby, I Love Your Way.” However, having forgotten all about Will to Power, I was working off the Peter Frampton recording. An enduring classic, as far as I’m concerned. And the dude still rocks live, too.
And before I forget to do this, I need to send a HUGE happy butt wiggle to my bud Tempest Knight, who recently got THE CALL (or, in this case, it might have been THE E-MAIL)! Cobblestone Press will be releasing her vampire romance, Enduring Promise on June 23. If you’ve got a spare second, why don’t you send her a congrats note through the contact link on her site? Tell her I sent ya.
Okay, moving on. I broke out some of my writing stuff this afternoon — finally. Organized my templates from the fabulous synopsis workshop I took last year with Mary Buckham. Actually, reorganized would be more accurate. Started breaking down my template responses by character, and I’m thinking I might also try and dump those same responses in chronological order too, just to see what happens.
It’s actually a good thing I did that, because once I got the kids from school… Here’s the story.
Can Ya Sing it?

Since I spent most of yesterday sleeping off whatever bug is attacking me, I’ve got lots of housecleaning to do today. But I still wanted to take a moment and post a Messed Up Tune since I didn’t last week.
So here ya go. Enjoy!
