Steve Irwin

At 11am today, 4 September 2006, Steve Irwin was fatally wounded by a stingray barb to his heart while filming a sequence on Batt Reef off Port Douglas for a new TV series.

Emergency services were called from Cairns Rescue Base and met Croc One, Steve’s rescue vessel, at Low Isle on the Great Barrier Reef.

The Croc One crew performed constant CPR during the thirty-minute dash to Low Isle, but Steve was pronounced deceased at 12 noon by Queensland Ambulance Services personnel.

His producer and closest friend, John Stainton said on Croc One today, “The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on the planet. He died doing what he loves best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. Steve would have said, ‘Crocs Rule!’”

The family wishes to advise that all donations go to Wildlife Warriors Worldwide.

This is so sad. I was doing searches last night trying to find out what happened.

Tess – So was I. And now they’re reporting the fatal blow was caught on tape and he removed the stingray’s barb from his chest ( more here ).

I like one comment left at the gate of the Australia Zoo:

I thought you were immortal. How I wish that was true.

Still so shocking, isn’t it? It seemed to be the major story on all the news channels yesterday, but it’s still a bit hard to believe. Definitely a great loss to world wildlife preservation.

I still can’t believe this. He was such a cool guy, and I hurt for his two small children.

I loved watching Steve on his shows and documentaries. The world is a better place because of him. I’ll keep his family in my prayers.

    Nienke –

The world is a better place because of him.

    I agree 100%.

Cynthia – Even now, I’m still having trouble with it. I was watching Trading Spaces on TDC earlier, and one of those tribute commercials came on. I nearly cried.

Heather – Five days later and I’m still in shock. Probably because he was so young and vibrant. Going back to that comment that was left at the Australia Zoo:

I thought you were immortal. How I wish that was true.

I think that’s part of why it’s so shocking. Guys like him are supposed to be immortal. In my mind, anyway.
