Saturday Shot 15 SEPT 2007

I decided to reach back into the archives for today’s shot. My archives, not the blog’s.
Back in October, 2000, SoundGuy had a show in Savannah. My mother happened to be in town, so we left the kids with her for the day and I got my very first trip (and so far, only trip) to the gorgeous and historical Georgia city on the coast.
SoundGuy was working all day, which left me to wander the city on my own. And take pictures. Lots of pictures. This was back in the day I was still shooting film with a point-n-shoot camera.
So that’s the background of the “me” part of the photo.
Anyhoo, this is a window on the side of The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, a beautiful Greek Revival Catholic church, and the oldest in Georgia. The church was closed and being renovated head-to-toe during our visit. I was kind of upset — from what I could see, the church was gorgeous, and I would have loved to seen inside.
The entire facade was encased on scaffolding, literally from the street to the tops of the tall spires. This picture is the only one I got without scaffolding. The church was reopened later that year, and from all reports, the interior is breathtaking.
My original source listed the dedication of this church in 1876 and the architecture as Greek Revival. I’ve also seen it called French Gothic. Being that I know so little about architecture, I can’t really say which it really is.
I’m also thinking that the window in this photo was replaced with stained glass before the reopening, but again, I can’t be sure. Guess I need to convince SoundGuy to take me back to Savannah! Actually, I do really want to go back, if for nothing else than to see this church in all its glory.
For further research, here’s the Google search I did on this church.
Big thanks to Carol, whose pictures from her recent Savannah trip reminded me I had this one hidden away.

What a gorgeous window! Having been to a few French Gothic cathedrals I can tell you that this window is typical of that style. Found an excellent example via google at this site:
