Can They Say That?

by Lynn Daniels on Sunday, September 28, 2008 at 8:57 pm

MiniMe had a game today against a team her coach kept saying was a really good team. The game ended in a tie, 4-4. So after we got home, we were talking about red cards and yellow cards — our opponents were yellow carded today — and I decided to check the red card status on our state soccer association website.

I got to the site, clicked to check the red cards, and nearly fell out of my seat laughing when I saw this unfortunate abbreviation for Arsenal:

Saturday Shot 27 SEPT 2007

Canyon

WHEW! Just got this week’s Saturday Shot in under the wire! I’m not entirely sure I’m happy with the processing on this one, but I’ll leave it for now — I swear, I’m going cross-eyed. :neener:

We’re in Yellowstone National Park again; this photo’s from the feature known as the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon is about 20 miles long, 1,500-4,000 feet across, and its walls are 800-1,200 feet deep. We were there to take photos of the Lower Falls (as everybody does), but when I saw this rock formation, I thought it was kind of interesting. The colors were dynamic, too.

We took it easy at Canyon this year, only taking the short walk to Artist Point and another short walk to shoot the Upper Falls (you’ll probably see pictures from both spots in the near future). Good thing the ease of the walk doesn’t relate to the quality of the view! Still, one of these days I’ll get up the courage to hike Uncle Tom’s Trail to the base of the falls. I’ll need lots of courage — that hike includes a steep metal staircase of over 300 steps and a descent of 500 feet.

Yikes!

Happy Punctuation Day!

by Lynn Daniels on Friday, September 26, 2008 at 8:32 am

.

.

I’m a couple days late, so I guess it’s happy belated punctuation day. I didn’t even know such an animal existed until I saw it highlighted in my newspaper. Whooda thunk?

The newspaper also contained the address of a blog, The “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks misinterpreting bad punctuation since 2005. If you’ve got some spare time, drop by and give it a read. I’m more irritated by misused apostrophes (or apostrophe’s, as it were *snork*), but the unnecessary quotation marks make for great entertainment.

Edited to add: Ahhh…here you go. Stuff about my big pet peeve. Apostrophe Abuse blog and Grocer’s Apostrophe on Flickr. Tons of fun!

Play the Game

by Lynn Daniels on Thursday, September 25, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Suddenly having a bit of a Queen moment… (play the game, everybody play the game of love)

I’ve been shopping!

That probably doesn’t seem like a very big deal, and to be honest, it truly isn’t. But with these recent trying economic times (my local newspaper tells me gas here in Georgia has gone from being some of the cheapest in the country to the most expensive), I realized it was time to step back and learn how to shop smart.

Back before our vacation, I saw a piece on one of the daytime talk shows about a website/shopping system called The Grocery Game. Back then, I signed on for the trial period, then went ahead and took full membership. I piddled around a bit with the system, tried a little here and there, but didn’t really do much with it. Until last week.

When I saw that the fact we didn’t have to send out a ridiculous amount of money in child support every month wasn’t making much dent in our budget, I revisited The Grocery Game. I read the support forums. I printed the lists. And I went shopping.

Last week, my first week, didn’t show a huge result. But it did show enough to get me excited. I started thinking that once I really work the system, I might actually see great results. This week, this week actually paid my membership fees. Not too shabby!

The game is about playing coupons with sales (hence the term game) for the highest savings, and stockpiling enough to last your family 3 months (the length of a full sales cycle). A quick example: Today at CVS, I purchased almost $70 worth of merchandise. I won’t have to buy any more multi-purpose cleaning spray for at least 3 months. I’m halfway stocked for laundry detergent, and almost completely stocked for shampoo (for me), deodorant, and soda. My total out-of-pocket, after sale prices, coupons, and CVS Extra Care bucks, was $33. PLUS, I received $8 in Extra Care bucks for my next shopping trip!

So now I’m an official Grocery Gamer, with my own coupon binder and everything. Yes, I’m excited, and it’s almost scary how the things that excite me have changed with the passing years. Damn, I’m getting old.

Oooh…plus, for the first time since Hurricane Ike, the gas station down the street had gas! That’s a really huge deal when you consider since that hurricane, a good day means there’s one gas station in my town with gas — a regular day is no gas in my town. Today the station that had gas was the one that gives me an additional $.10/gallon discount.

Yup, a really good shopping day for me today.

Spectacular. Not.

Tess tagged me for this one (tit for tat, eh?) a few days ago, and I’m sad to say I’m only just getting to it. It’s so hard for me to come up with things to list that people wouldn’t find unbelievably exciting and interesting! Yeah, right. Truth is there’s so much to choose from I hardly know where to start. :neener:

Fresh Water for the Horses

by Lynn Daniels on Friday, September 5, 2008 at 11:25 pm

With sword and shield in hand, I’ve bravely been battling that which has been trying to attack me all week. A nasty bug. And not one of those cool writing bugs, either, but one of those bugs that forces extra rest and a big ol’ case of the icks.

I’m fighting in the morning and trucking the kids ’round to their activities every afternoon. I think by the evening, the bug is a bit worn out. Lucky for me (yeah, right), when morning shines through my bedroom window it’s rejuvenated and ready to rock. Even better, I get to be up again six hours from now to get ready to take MiniMe to her first soccer game this season.

I hate games that start at dark-thirty. :sigh: Wish me luck. :fingers:

Have a good weekend!
