Snowcapped Mountains

Here we are, the first Saturday Shot of 2009. It’s a return (once again) to our vacation this past summer back to Yellowstone County, and with this photo we’re back on the Beartooth Scenic Highway (US 212) in Montana.

Welcome to the mountains! They’re covered in snow — an odd thing for me to see since this photo was taken in June. I know some of you out there are currently buried in snow, and photos of more snow are the last thing you want to see, but here in Georgia, we don’t get a lot of snow, so it’s still exciting.

Even though we’ve just started a new year, which warrants a discussion of the year gone by and the year ahead, I won’t do that today. It’s Saturday Shot day.

Even though my family had a wonderful day in the mountains yesterday, where it was foggy and we actually found icicles, I won’t discuss that today. It’s Saturday Shot day.

But I will have some topics for the coming days, won’t I?

Have a great weekend!

Snowman

Does anybody else stress as much around the holidays as I do? I swear, come holiday time I spend all my waking hours running and running and running, only stopping long enough to sleep at night. I will be so grateful when the holidays are over.

Somehow, I managed to find enough time to process a photo, get back online, and post. Aren’t you excited? I know I am.

Sarcasm aside, here’s a Saturday Shot for you! Being that it’s the holiday season, I thought a little whimsy was in order. This shot is from our second day in Yellowstone Country. We took my favorite drive over the Beartooth Scenic Highway, but this time we made a stop we’d never taken before.

On the Montana side of the pass is a large rest area, complete with restrooms and an overlook. While my family hit the restrooms, I trucked my butt on out to the farthest edge of the overlook and took a bunch of pictures. I also took some pictures for other tourists who saw my camera rig and figured I could get a good picture of them with their little point-n-shoot.

I sure hope that photo came out well for them.

At any rate, once I’d taken my fill of shots, I turned around to rejoin my family back by the parking lot. After two or three steps, I was laughing my butt off. Somebody had built a little snowman up on one of the walls, giving him little stick arms and hair. That person had been generous enough to leave the snowman behind for others to enjoy.

I enjoyed it, then went one step further. I took a picture.

Have a great weekend!

Vacation Day Five — Bears!

by Lynn Daniels on Friday, August 1, 2008 at 10:13 pm

I’m a little behind in my vacation report posts, and with any posts at all. This hard drive failure is giving me fits, so please bear with me.

Anyway, on to day five — our first full day in Yellowstone Country. And the first thing we did, after a leisurely morning that included a rousing game of National Parks Monopoly, was hit the Beartooth. But this time, I was armed with my camera gear.

Saturday Shot 19 JULY 2008

Beartooth Reflection

Welcome to the first Saturday Shot from my 2008 Yellowstone Country vacation! Today’s shot comes from the Beartooth Scenic Highway, which is probably my favorite drive. That’s Beartooth Butte and it’s reflection in Beartooth Lake. And the white stuff at the bottom of the butte? Ice. Frozen lake. On June 22nd. Blew my mind!

This was our second time on the Beartooth Highway this trip, and our second day in Cooke City. I still can’t believe the amount of snow still remaining. Some of the lakes further up the highway were not only completely frozen, but they were also snow-covered. With snowmobile tracks criss-crossing the surface! We must have seen at least a half-dozen snowmobiles enjoying the white stuff on this day. How cool is that?

Saturday Shot 22 SEPT 2007

I’ve been daring to poke my head out of the cave a little bit yesterday and today. Nearly got my head lopped off yesterday as a result, but a great visit with Tess last night helped tremendously. I might talk a little about our discussions tomorrow here on the blog. But not today. Because today is Saturday Shot day.
