Got Gas?

Things may be looking up gas-wise here in North Georgia. During today’s shopping trip, three of the six gas stations I passed had gas. Even better than that — NO LINES! We’re still paying more (by $0.30/gallon) than the national average, but I was actually able to fill up, so I call that a good day.The local news is reporting suppliers not licensed in Georgia are now able to sell gasoline to stations here, and the pipeline supplying us is up. The gas in the pipeline will take 5-6 days to get here, but it’s a positive sign. As long as it’s true. I’m keeping in mind that when this first started, officials reported our shortage would only last 3-4 days. Here it is 3 weeks later and they’re giving us a new story.
Still, it’s good news after a couple weeks of not-so-good news.
More good news — I’m still playing the Grocery Game. Today I paid $61 on a $104 grocery bill, and I’m stocked for fabric softener and air freshener. Plus, one of our local drugstores is sending me a $10 gift card and a $16 check, and that’s after just 2 weeks of shopping.
Ooh, and the weather’s cooled again, so my windows are open. Love that!
Yup, it’s a pretty good day today. How’s your day?
Play the Game

Suddenly having a bit of a Queen moment… (play the game, everybody play the game of love)
I’ve been shopping!
That probably doesn’t seem like a very big deal, and to be honest, it truly isn’t. But with these recent trying economic times (my local newspaper tells me gas here in Georgia has gone from being some of the cheapest in the country to the most expensive), I realized it was time to step back and learn how to shop smart.
Back before our vacation, I saw a piece on one of the daytime talk shows about a website/shopping system called The Grocery Game. Back then, I signed on for the trial period, then went ahead and took full membership. I piddled around a bit with the system, tried a little here and there, but didn’t really do much with it. Until last week.
When I saw that the fact we didn’t have to send out a ridiculous amount of money in child support every month wasn’t making much dent in our budget, I revisited The Grocery Game. I read the support forums. I printed the lists. And I went shopping.
Last week, my first week, didn’t show a huge result. But it did show enough to get me excited. I started thinking that once I really work the system, I might actually see great results. This week, this week actually paid my membership fees. Not too shabby!
The game is about playing coupons with sales (hence the term game) for the highest savings, and stockpiling enough to last your family 3 months (the length of a full sales cycle). A quick example: Today at CVS, I purchased almost $70 worth of merchandise. I won’t have to buy any more multi-purpose cleaning spray for at least 3 months. I’m halfway stocked for laundry detergent, and almost completely stocked for shampoo (for me), deodorant, and soda. My total out-of-pocket, after sale prices, coupons, and CVS Extra Care bucks, was $33. PLUS, I received $8 in Extra Care bucks for my next shopping trip!
So now I’m an official Grocery Gamer, with my own coupon binder and everything. Yes, I’m excited, and it’s almost scary how the things that excite me have changed with the passing years. Damn, I’m getting old.
Oooh…plus, for the first time since Hurricane Ike, the gas station down the street had gas! That’s a really huge deal when you consider since that hurricane, a good day means there’s one gas station in my town with gas — a regular day is no gas in my town. Today the station that had gas was the one that gives me an additional $.10/gallon discount.
Yup, a really good shopping day for me today.
Five for Friday #9

Five stores it’s nearly impossible for me to pass (and shopping’s not even one of my favorite pasttimes!):
The Aftermath

Let’s review my past few days.
I submitted IH Friday and promptly wanted to hurl. Saturday and Sunday, MiniMe had a soccer tournament about a 45 minute drive away. Two games Saturday — they tied the first game, won the second. They had a third game on Sunday, but MiniMe woke up and promptly vomited (sympathy nausea?), so we stayed home.
She’s better now, by the way.
I Swear it Was the Accent

SoundGuy and I have a gala to go to this coming weekend. I’ve mentioned he works for a church –this gala is to celebrate the head pastor’s 25th pastoral anniversary. In other words, it’s a Big Deal. The Big Deal that I’ve been dieting for. So on Saturday, I grabbed MiniMe and we went dress shopping.
I hate dress shopping. I’m not a big shopper overall, but for me, dress shopping is the equivalent of having teeth pulled.
